Message from Our Chair
Michal Perlman

The Atkinson Centre stands at the intersection of scholarship, policy innovation, and professional practice in early childhood education and care. Our purpose—turning high-quality research into actionable knowledge—has never been more important. As Canada embarks on an historic expansion of early learning and child-care services, decision-makers and front-line educators alike need clear, credible evidence to guide solutions that are equitable, accessible, and sustainable.

My vision is to deepen the Centre’s role as a hub for:

  • Generating insight through rigorous, multidisciplinary inquiry;
  • Translating findings into concrete tools that inform legislation, funding formulas, and classroom practice; and
  • Amplifying impact by engaging practitioners, families, and communities in two-way dialogue.

Flagship initiatives such as the Early Childhood Education Report and our partnership with George Brown College on Professional Pay and Decent Work will continue to anchor this agenda, while new projects will explore quality-assurance systems, workforce development, and inclusive pedagogies. We are equally committed to nurturing the next generation of leaders—undergraduate and graduate students who can seamlessly bridge research, policy, and practice.

Equity, diversity, and anti-oppressive practice are not add-ons; they are woven through every study we conduct, every resource we share, and every event we host. By strengthening our community-university network, we aim to ensure that all children—regardless of postal code, identity, or ability—benefit from responsive, high-quality early learning experiences.

I invite you to explore our work, collaborate with our team, and join us in advancing evidence-based policies and practices that honour the potential of every child and family.
